May Pon Joins Partners in Preservation Advisory Committee

NAWBOŽ-SF chapter president May Pon has joined other San Francisco Bay Area civic and business leaders on the American Express Partners in Preservation Advisory Committee. Partners in Preservation is a joint venture between American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. American Express Partners in Preservation is a $10 million, five-year commitment to historic preservation that will increase public awareness of the importance of historic preservation in the United States and around the world. This commitment will help protect historic and cultural landmarks and will strengthen local communities. It is a joint effort between American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund. The National Trust for Historic Preservation champions preservation by providing leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to people working to preserve, improve, and enjoy the places that matter to them. Based in Washington, D.C., the National Trust provides services through a network of regional offices, including a Western Office located in San Francisco.

This year, the American Express Partners in Preservation initiative in the U.S. will focus on the Bay Area. The Advisory Committee will help select among 25 historic sites throughout the Bay Area and award $1,000,000 in grants to fund the preservations projects. The public has been invited to cast votes for their favorite historic landmark during the next months. The community votes will count as part of the decision process.

Center for Women's Business Research Biennial Update

Women-owned firms continue to grow at twice the rate of all firms, according to the biennial update by the Center for Women's Business Research. OPEN from American Express SM is the exclusive underwriter of the 2006 biennial update.

As of 2006, the Center estimates there are 7.7 million majority women-owned firms (firms at least 51% owned by a woman or women). Between 1997 and 2006 the number of majority women-owned firms increased from 5.4 to 7.7 million, an increase of 42%, almost double that of all firms (23%).

The new projections also show that there are 10.4 million businesses 50% or more owned by a woman or women that employ 13 million employees and generate nearly $2 trillion ($1.9) in revenues.

In 2006, majority women-owned firms are expected to generate more than $1 trillion ($1.1) in revenues and employ 7.2 million workers. Nearly three-quarters (74%) of all women-owned firms are majority women-owned.

The fastest growing industry sectors for majority-owned firms (between 1997 and 2006) are wholesale trade (283%), health care services (130%), arts, entertainment and recreation (117%), and professional, scientific and technical services (83%). The largest percentage of majority women-owned firms is in the service sector (69%) followed by retail trade (14%).

The 2006 regional, state and metro updates of women-owned businesses will be released in late fall of this year.

Capital Choices Volume II: Center for Women's Business Research

Women business owners in the United States desire to grow their enterprises and are learning how to find the money to do it, according to Capital Choices: Volume Two, The Value of Knowledge, a study by the Center for Women's Business Research and Wells Fargo.

Among the study's findings are:

--57% of women business owners have a business line of credit and 41% have business bank loans.
--42% of women business owners with lines of credit and 43% with bank loans wanted their businesses to be as large as possible. This compares to 29% and 32%, respectively, of women who had not obtained either of these sources of capital.
--Women do not give up easily. When turned down by one source of business lines of credit, 58% sought out other lenders.
--But, there is still a lot to learn. The study found that 74% never considered selling or pledging accounts receivable,55% did not think of unsecured personal loans, and 42% never considered vendor credit as a source of capital.

October Dinner Event: Deciding to Sell Your Company, with Saman Dias

Deciding to Sell Your Company
Thursday, October 12
6:00pm to 9:00 p.m.
World Trade Club, Behind the Ferry Building, San Francisco
Cost: $40 Members; $50 Guests
Speaker: Saman Dias, NorthPoint Real Estate Investment Services

As a business owner, you may feel that you've poured time, energy, and money into your business forever. You may see your company as an extension of yourself, and it may be hard even to imagine life without it. But have you ever considered reaping the benefits of all your work by actually selling your business? Join us on October 12 at the World Trade Club as award-winning entrepreneur Saman Dias tells us the story of how she built up and then sold her multi-million dollar global training company!

Selling a business? As a small business owner or even a fairly new business you are probably asking yourself how this topic affects you. The answer is this: even in the early stages of a business, we should all be considering what our end goal will be ... how big do we want to grow, when do we want to get out of the business, when do we want to retire, what happens to our business if we can no longer manage it ourselves? Maybe you are not ready to move on yet, but it is never too early to plan for that day and incorporate your exit strategy into your overall business plan.

Saman will be talking about how this forward thinking approach allowed her to grow her business and reap the benefits of it at the peak of its success.
