... Cindy Fassler Celebrates 25 Years in Business!
Cindy Fassler of TSS Personnel Agency will celebrate 25 years in business this March. What a fabulous accomplishment for anyone, but especially for a woman starting a business in 1982!

Cindy had worked for another staffing service which closed its office. As any bright woman knew, she needed financing to start her own company. Which bank should she approach? She went to the only bank she knew would help her—her Dad—and asked him for a loan. Her dad said: Present me with a marketing plan, and we’ll talk. (All her Mother wanted her to do was to get married and have kids!) 1982 was before the internet, so Cindy used the library for research. She prepared her plan—her dad tweaked it, gave her ideas, and lent her the money. She called all of her clients who had worked with her previously, and then, Cindy was in business! Temporary Support Services was born. She paid back her dad in three years.

Cindy worked out of her house initially and then took temporary office space. She did everything: re-interviewed all of her candidates, did her own applications, and met with clients. She gradually hired people and now has six employees.

A passion for her industry and personal service have contributed to Cindy's hallmarks—high touch and high visibility. If a customer has a challenge, she is right there to ask how to make it better. Her clients are loyal. She is honest with her clients. If she doesn’t have a qualified candidate, she will call the client back and tell her to call her back-up service. More times than not, the client will wait. They’ll accept a temp in the meantime and let her continue her recruiting efforts.

Cindy says to always follow your gut instinct. If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest. Don’t fake it. If you don’t know, tell the other person you don’t know. Be clear about your values. Stay focused. Everyone goes through a time when they are just going through the motions. Get back on track as soon as you can.

Cindy is celebrating 25 years of TSS Personnel by giving a party for every client who has given her a job order in last 10 years. NAWBO is celebrating, too. Congratulations, Cindy!

... Deborah Wilder Managing Partner,
Law Offices of Deborah Wilder
, was recently named President of Women Construction Owners and Executives, USA.

WCOE was conceived in 1983 by 11 construction women who envisioned a national association to custom fit their unique business needs. They formed Women Construction Owners & Executives, USA to promote opportunities and business for women-owned firms and policy-making executives in the construction industry.

Today, the association continues to grow, adding members and establishing chapters across the country. As a Coalition Partner of Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), WCOE continues to advocate and influence the national agenda affecting women owned businesses.

... The new season of the TV reality series "Survivor" began in February and the featured contestants included architect Sylvia Kwan, owner of Kwan Henmi Architecture/Planning Inc. Sylvia was among the 19 contestants competing for a $1 million prize by "outwitting, outlasting and outplaying" other competitors on a remote Fiji island. Sylvia is a long-time friend of the NAWBO-SF chapter, and we wish her all the best! (If you have been watching the show, you already know what has happened so far -- if not, we don't want to spoil it for those of you who may decide to watch on "On Demand"!)

The next Walnut Creek Resources and Referrals Breakfast meeting will be held on Thursday, March 15 from 7:30am to 9:15am at Il Fornaio Restaurant in Walnut Creek.

This month's topic: Building Your Own “Advisory Board”. Just because you are a sole proprietor or micro-business owner doesn’t mean that you can’t benefit from the value of an advisory board. Most small companies have Boards of Directors, and those that don’t find other ways to gain insight and perspective through the business wisdom of trusted advisors. We will discuss: when advisors are needed; what type of advice is most useful; the characteristics of a good advisor; and how to convince someone to be your advisor. If you already have an “advisory board” in place, please come and share your experience with trusted colleagues and associates.

These morning breakfast meetings provide a comfortable forum for business women and entrepreneurs to meet monthly, exchange ideas and discuss business challenges. The Resources and Referrals Breakfasts are a dynamic, informative and productive way to spend your breakfast!
