PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Sharon Gadberry

GROW, THRIVE, LEAD
by Sharon Gadberry
of Power Transitions
(www.tmgoi.com)

Thank you for selecting me for a repeat performance as your Chapter President for 2004-2005. I am proud, pleased, and grateful to be serving and representing women business owners in San Francisco, Marin, and the East Bay. Our mission is to help you and your businesses to grow, thrive, and lead. We want to help you achieve more financial success, personal and professional satisfaction, and leadership in the community.

As the fiscal year ends, I want to thank our 2003-2004 Board, our committee members and volunteers, our service providers, and our corporate partners. The NAWBO-SF Board is a 100% "labor of love" and every accomplishment is truly a team endeavor. But it is important to recognize the people who stepped up to the plate and took responsibility for making ideas happen, and for making the following accomplishments possible:

The new NAWBO-SF Board meets on July 23 for an all-day planning session. Our goal is to make the coming months the best ever for our members and our chapter. In addition to carrying on with our past successful programs, we are also planning on:

It is one of the characteristics of women entrepreneurs to enjoy working relationships and to revel in risk, reward, and success. Many of us also want to work for a good cause. When you participate in NAWBO, you have the unique opportunity of forming lasting business and personal relationships, while at the same time leading a thriving enterprise (NAWBO itself), and furthering the cause of women business owners.

"The mind is like a parachute. It works best when it is open."—Anonymous

President, NAWBO-SF

NAWBO NEWS & EVENTS

RAISE A TOAST TO SUMMER!

Susan SelbySusan Selby of Selby Winery is passionate about wine and wine making. For the past nine years, she has been the wine maker and CEO at Selby Winery in Healdsburg. "People don't often think of winemaking as a thrill a minute, fast-paced business. It is for me. As the winemaker, I'm in the thick of it."

Susie learned the business, literally from the ground up. She'll share how she began, how she learned winemaking, and how she's faced unique challenges as a woman business owner in the wine industry. As an extra treat, she's bringing wine to taste!

You won't want to miss Selby Winery's award winning Sauvignon Blanc and a chance to hear, first-hand, a woman's fascinating success story in an industry largely dominated by men.

SECOND TUESDAY - NEW MASTERMIND™ SERIES

Mastermind™ is an advisory board program for women leading businesses. Participants, who have committed to attending the six-month cycle, meet on the second Tuesday of each month for continental breakfast from 7:30a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the office of Carlton, DiSante & Freudenberger LLP, 260 California St., San Francisco.

Mastermind provides program members with an advisory board of NAWBO women who share business know-how, feedback, and insight from their own experience, and it's a great way to connect with other NAWBO members in a supportive environment. The current program enrollment runs through November and is filled.

Those interested in participating in the next Mastermind series should contact Rhoda Singer at 415.333.2130, email: [email protected], FAX 415-586-6606, to be placed on the waiting list.

New in the East Bay!
THIRD TUESDAY RELATIONSHIPS & REFERRALS (EAST BAY)

JUNE DINNER EVENT - A RETROSPECTIVE

Playing musical tables during facilitated discussions allowed members and guests to absorb a wealth of timely information from NAWBO's subject-matter experts.

Special thanks to Ann Bisagno of Xantrion (Coping with IT Needs), Donna Bletzinger of Dyer Stephenson (Web Marketing), Denise Brouillette of The Innovative Edge (Stress Management), Andrea Kelly-Smethurst of Kelly-Smethurst & Associates (Contractors vs. Employees), Caterina Rando of Power Dynamics (Making Effective Presentations), and Susan Shargel of Shargel Insurance (Health Insurance for Small Business Owners).

Was it just our imagination, or is women's interest in life-balance and stress-management on the rise?

AUGUST - THOSE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER

NAWBO-SF's regular August dinner meeting will be suspended due to vacations, but the Tuesday morning networking programs will continue during the month.

WIN A FREE DINNER MEETING

Watch for the NAWBO-SF survey, which will come to you via email. Help us to evaluate and plan our programs by taking five minutes to respond and your name will be included in a drawing for a free dinner meeting, good from July 2004 to July 2005.

NAWBO-SF CHAPTER SPONSORS MARATHON TEAM

The San Francisco Nike Women's Marathon is coming up, and NAWBO-SF is forming a team! On October 24, 2004 we hope that 100 of our members and their friends and family members will be out running, walking, and cheering the team on.

See Jane Run Sports will provide a 15-week training program for our group. We will begin July 11 in San Francisco, and continue every Sunday.

Runners are welcome. Luckily our chapter is blessed with an outstanding athlete, who in the past has competed professional in Iron Man competitions. That person is NAWBO volunteer Michelle Deasy ([email protected]), who has agreed to take responsibility for recruiting and mentoring our team.

Those of us who are not runners are also invited to participate in the training and the marathon. The event includes a walk for those of us who can't imagine running a marathon. The training and the event are great ways to improve your fitness and morale.

Training for, and participation in, this event is a great way to bond with other women business owners, and to team-build with your business partners and employees. Please invite your employees, colleagues, clients, friends and relatives to participate along with you.

So spread the word, get everyone on board and help support NAWBO, build relationships, and get into great shape! You can find out more on the See Jane Run website: http://www.seejanerunsports.com/training/marathon.shtml.
