Board Member Spotlight: Deborah Wilder |
||||||||||||
Deborah Wilder has been a member of NAWBOŽ since 1995. She is an attorney in the field of Labor and Employment law, representing employers for 25 years. She lives in Foster City, where she served eight years as a member of the City Council and two years as Mayor. Deborah is NAWBOŽ's resident "Political Junkie" traveling to Sacramento and Washington D.C. many times each year to advocate on behalf of women business owners. She currently serves on the Local NAWBOŽ Board as our Public Policy Representative. Her job is to interface between national NAWBOŽ and our chapter on issues of political importance. Deborah is also the current Chair Elect of NAWBOŽ National's Public Policy Forum. Deborah says that many women think that politics is "dirty" or complicated or time consuming. She tries to let women know that none of that is necessarily true. "What is true is that what happens in Sacramento and Washington D.C. impacts how you run your business," Deborah says, "It is everything from worker's compensation reform, to overtime requirements, to health care costs to environmental requirements, to contract opportunities and more. Women business owners need to realize that they need to get into politics or get out of business! That does not mean that every NAWBOŽ member needs to run for elective office. But, it does mean that you have an obligation to know what is going on around you that impacts your business and you have an obligation to act to promote good laws and candidates or oppose bad laws and candidates." Deborah reminds our membership that the NAWBOŽ Public Policy Forum is February 25-27 in Washington D.C. She urges you to attend and learn why politics is important to your business and how to empower yourself to influence your future. Deborah E.G. Wilder |
